Mail Fraud Resources and Best Practices

USPS Inspectors with the United States Postal Inspection Service, Erin Leipold and Jennifer Smith, attended the March 2024 Preparedness Committee meeting to present information and resources about mail fraud.

Best practices:

• Call 1-877-876-2455 to report mail theft to the Postal Inspection Service, and file a report with Chicago Police Department
• Keep mailboxes behind the security desk or within view of Security
• Place cameras near mailboxes
• Tell tenants not to leave checks in mailboxes overnight
• Do not keep any bins of outgoing mail open/unattended
• Ask mail carriers entering the building for ID (should contain name, USPS logo, city, and expiration date)
