Online Registration and Payment Now Available for Fire Safety Certification Program

March 16, 2016

Nearly one hundred individuals have already completed the City of Chicago's revised Fire Safety Director Program since the initial pilot offering on February 23. The revised certification program consists of three consecutive four-hour days which includes training and the overall exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, an individual will be issued a provisional certificate and will have 30 days to be certified at his or her building. If the individual changes buildings, he or she will need to be recertified at the new building. It will not be necessary to retake the entire course.

As of March 23, 2016, online registration and payment is now available. The system also allows for building owners and operators to register and track individual Fire Safety Director certifications and renewals associated with each building.  Certification will be effective for two years. Certified registrants will receive an email about renewal approximately six months before their current certification expires.  In the future, recertification will also take place online.

After BOMA/Chicago advocated for much needed revisions to the Chicago Fire Safety Director Program, the city made several changes. The program will no longer be administered through City Colleges and will not require college credit. The revised program will consist of three consecutive four-hour days as opposed to the current eight eight-hour days spread over eight weeks. The three days will be used for training and the overall exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, an individual will be issued a provisional certificate and will have 30 days to be certified at his or her building. This will consist of an onsite test to demonstrate familiarity with the particular building.
